The Meadow of Gold
Golden meadows embraced by silver glaciers. Sonmarg is the gateway to Ladakh and the starting point for some of Kashmir's most dramatic landscapes — from the Thajiwas Glacier to the turquoise waters of alpine lakes.
Sonmarg, or 'Meadow of Gold', earns its poetic name from the golden hues that wash over its vast alpine meadow in autumn. Situated at 2,730 metres, it sits on the Srinagar–Leh highway and serves as the last major town before the dramatic high-altitude passes that lead into Ladakh. The Thajiwas Glacier, a short trek from the main meadow, is a year-round snow destination that delights visitors with snow activities even in late summer. The Sindh River, which originates near Sonmarg, is a favourite for trout fishing, while Vishansar and Krishansar Lakes — part of the Great Lakes Trek — begin their journey from this base.

A stunning glacier accessible by pony or a short trek — snow activities here are possible even in July and August.

The point where the road ends and only snow begins — a dramatic, icy landscape at over 3,500 metres elevation.

A sparkling glacial river ideal for trout fishing, riverside picnics, and quiet reflection amidst majestic mountain scenery.

A stunning turquoise alpine lake at 3,710 metres, reached by trekking through the Great Lakes trail from Sonmarg.

A dramatic valley serving as the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra — breathtaking mountain scenery and a roaring river.

A high mountain pass above 4,000 metres offering spectacular views — accessible to trekkers on the Great Lakes circuit.
